Do you think slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation? Ya, so did I. But as we say in the south “aw hell naw”. Something called Convict Leasing was born to fill the labor gap left by freed women and men of color...
Vagrancy laws meant that if you didn’t have a job you were breaking the law. If you were black it meant you were arrested and then “leased” to companies for forced labor. Do you think it was easy for a black person to get a job in Alabama in 1870? #BlackLivesMatter #lookitup
By 1898, 73% of Alabama’s entire state revenue was from Convict Leasing. One would think conditions would be better for a “leased convict” than a slave. But you’d be wrong. They didn’t need to keep them alive or healthy. They could always just lease another HUMAN FUCKING BEING.
“Jill-ann, that was SO long ago!” WRONG AGAIN. It wasn’t made illegal until 1941. #blacklivesmatter #lookitup
