[Thread] George Floyd and Derek Chauvin: Are we asking the right questions?

Andrea Jenkins, MN City Council Vice President tells us that George Floyd and Derek Chauvin worked together for 17 years.

While we don’t know when or how their employment ended, Santamaria says they both worked there until “the end of last year [2019].”

“Santamaria owned the building for nearly two decades, but sold the venue within the last few months.”

Did they leave when ownership changed?
/3
Santamaria says she can’t be certain if the two knew each other.

"They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside."

How large was this club?
/4
Santamaria also still continues to own and operate La Raza 95.7 FM radio station in the same building that houses El Nuevo Rodeo.
(According to the same article above)

/6
Santamaria also volunteered to the TV station that Chauvin "had a real short fuse," also adding that he often pulled out mace and pepper spray when she thought it was unwarranted.

But she doesn’t know him well enough to know whether he knew Floyd.

/7
The building burned Thursday night. Records are likely gone.

“Such sad news to wake up and know that all your business and work was destroyed by the vandalizers," Santamaria wrote in Spanish in a Facebook post. "We didn't manage to rescue anything.“

To recap, Floyd and Chauvin worked for Santamaria for 17 years.

In the last few months, she sold the company and they both left.

The building burned in the protests Thursday night, destroying everything, and Santamaria says that she isn’t aware if they ever knew each other.

WaPo recently released an excellent video supercut, including footage from multiple private cameras and bodycam footage of the event.

This is a must watch to understand the event.

While I haven’t found any strong evidence of serious misconduct at El Nuevo, it does appear that they were almost shut down in 2010, for “a pattern of offenses [...] including liquor violations and security issues”

So to recap again:

Floyd and Chauvin worked security together for 17 years, at a night club that had previously faced violations for liquor licensing - and for *security issues.*

They left around the time the company changed ownership.

/13
A few months later, Floyd tried to make a purchase with a counterfeit bill.

The police arrived, Floyd was held, then Chauvin arrived a few minutes later, and he calmly - almost nonchalantly - kneeled on Floyd’s lungs and throat, for 2.5 minutes *after* he was unresponsive.

/14
Afterward, there were violent protests, and the building where they used to work was burned - destroying any financial and employment records that may have existed.

And the owner now says she has no idea whether they knew each other.

Have any officials questioned Santamaria?
