As a HOF rookie collector, I’ve had to make (and constantly tweak) my own rules for what I accept as a “rookie” for pre-war players. This article helps explain why https://twitter.com/prewarcards/status/1266774535845679104
Example: Heinie Manush and Earl Averill have “RCs” in 1933 Goudey. Manush debuted in 1920, Averill in 1929. I look for the 1st card post-debut, but will accept anything up to (and including) that 1st major release. For Manush, 1929 Kashin, for Averill, 1929 R316
I’ve decided that premiums (poster/pictures you sent in for) and magazine inserts (early M-cards) don’t count. I also have decided to exclude strip cards, but include Exhibits like these
Postcards are a mixed bag. I love them, but decided that I’d rather have a T or E card from 1909-1910 and count that as the rookie than a 1907-08 postcard. Hughie Jennings stays in my collection anyway, since his playing days extend to the 1800s, and this card is magic
Game cards are another issue - LOTS of players have early cards in 1906 Fan Craze. Sam Crawford makes his 1st appearance there, but for non-tigers I’d rather have the “major” release of T or E cards.
All of which is to say: there is no consensus in this for pre-war players, so make your own rules, break them or change them if you need to, and make exceptions if it makes you happier. Don’t be oppressed by your own collection.
