To those not familiar with UK politics, Kier Starmer is the new leader of the Labour Party and was the director of public prosecutions during the 2011 London riots where he opted for a policy of fast-tracking prosecutions as a deterrent for others.

The riots, like the ones Starmer is expressing empathy for in the US, began after the racist killing of Mark Duggan, and were in reaction to his murder as well as broader racist and discriminatory policing practices
