This week, our Dean @siusom put forth a powerful statement, that you can read here, as well as on the attached photo.

I’d like to share a brief story on why this powerful statement demonstrates the need to never give up on speaking up.

Earlier this week, I spoke with my Dean in the aftermath of the murder of #GeorgeFloyd. Those concerns are highlighted in the attached thread linked to the opening tweet.

Briefly, they centered around the central tenet that healthcare and medicine must be on the frontlines of dismantling #racism.

Why? Because racism ➡️ #inequity, and inequity ➡️ healthcare disparities.

Without dismantling racism, we will NEVER fix inequity in healthcare.

/3
The other component of my conversation centered around the fact that we cannot place the burden of fighting #racism on the victims of racism.

Our Black and Brown communities experience the trauma. They should not be responsible for healing the trauma.

/4
Our Dean listened.

He LISTENED.

His statement reflects this, and demonstrates his commitment to collaborating with leaders in #equity at our institution to become an #antiracist organization.

I encourage you to please read it. It’s powerful and so necessary.

Here’s the point: YOUR VOICE MATTERS.

My voice mattered.
As a women of color, I often don’t feel my voice matters.
I often feel unheard, ignored, or without significance.

Our Dean not only heard me, but he acted on it.
And his voice has power and influence.

I hesitated making this post bc I was so fearful of sounding self-important.

I didn’t want this to be about me.
Bc tbis is bigger than all of us combined.

But I wanted to share how important is to speak up. How it mattered when I spoke up.

/7
If you would have told me 20 years ago that my voice mattered, that there are ways I could effect change, that there are many ways to be a leader, I would have smiled and thought “no way. Not for me”.

/8
It dawned on my that I’ve been able to do some things that the younger, shy and not confident me never would have thought possible.

/9
And the most important lesson?
Never give up on speaking up.

This fight to dismantle racism is too critical for each one of us to not use the privilege that we may have to effect change.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS.

There are countless leaders in the fight for #equity & #Equality in America.
But we all can be a leader in this fight.
The only qualification is your passion.
No research, writing, credentials needed.
Believe me.
Just need the energy and quest for a better future for all ❤️
