What horrifies me most (not saying it is actually significant in the scheme of things) about the murder of George Floyd is my own response: how unshocked I feel. It feels normal and expected for black men in America to be murdered by the people who are meant to protect them.
That's a step towards feeling there's nothing that can be done about it, it's just the way things are. Without justifying violence, this is why the protests are so necessary and calls to stop them IMO misguided:
the unacceptability of what happened is something that cannot even be taken for granted. It must be drawn to our attention. And I must howl and pray against the resignation I detect in myself.
