What horrifies me most (not saying it is actually significant in the scheme of things) about the murder of George Floyd is my own response: how unshocked I feel. It feels normal and expected for black men in America to be murdered by the people who are meant to protect them.
That& #39;s a step towards feeling there& #39;s nothing that can be done about it, it& #39;s just the way things are. Without justifying violence, this is why the protests are so necessary and calls to stop them IMO misguided:
the unacceptability of what happened is something that cannot even be taken for granted. It must be drawn to our attention. And I must howl and pray against the resignation I detect in myself.
