One of the first TV events I remember seeing with my family, especially my Dad, was Roots. He told me from birth that just because your Mom is White don't think that means they don't know you aren't. You go to America and you'll be Black, and they'll hate you for it.
He really drummed into me over and over that I would never be seen as White, that I had to remember I was always going to be judged, valued, spoke to, and treated differently than my White friends. He wasn't wrong & at least he prepared me. It was the one good Father thing he did
Every time I went to Detroit to see a band he would warn me that White people will you know are Black because you have small ears so keep them covered. Of course I thought he was just being his usual slightly insane self. I still don't know of that's a thing.
However I did notice there is a huge race divide in America. In Canada it is normal to grow up with multirace friends around in large cities. In America they don't mix. I can understand why. If I was a Black person living in America I would be in a constant state of rage & fear.
We aren't less racist at all, we just hide it better, but there is a huge divide in America between White and everyone else and White will do anything to hold on to that power.
