“stand in solidarity with other marginalized communities” and do one about police brutality and systemic racism against black people next, @hypebae!
i know firsthand this is a topic the team doesn’t wanna touch. i know because as the only black woman on staff then i had to fight to be able to post about #philandocastile and #altonsterling but was only permitted to via news aggregation by saying “look, beyonce said something.”
(this, and the burden i felt having to constantly speak up about black issues + diversity while trying so very hard to not be the “angry black woman” of the office is another story for another time.)
that two of the biggest brands @hypebae posts about alll day did this and there was no acknowledgement, or “reporting” on it is telling. don’t get me wrong, aggregated news is not enough here. it’s not sufficient. but it’s literally the least you could do.
at this point, any statement that any company (media/retail/etc.) makes just feels very performative. they’re not speaking out because it’s the right thing to do. they’re doing it because they were a) called out or b) don’t want to be.
meanwhile, the hypebae team hasn’t posted in one full day (which is odd, because i know how weekend shifts work.) it’s only a matter of time until the hypebeast post is just re-shared here and that’ll be that 🤷🏽‍♀️
