Prior to the war and genocide, Satko was a normal kid. Studying in school, playing with kids, and getting along with everyone. He had no inclination his peaceful life would change and that he would be imprisoned in a concentration camp. #RememberingSrebrenicaLive
“It takes a lot to get people to kill their neighbors, to rape their neighbors, to rob them” Satko says as he remarks on the way the Serbian leadership turned people against the Bosniak Muslim population. #WhiteArmBandDay
“During the month of May in Prijedor, as Serb leaders took over Prijedor and Kozarac, Bosniak Muslims lost their jobs, were forced out of their homes and many were sent to concentration camps”

#RememberingSrebrenicaLive
On May 30th, the Serbian leadership announced via radio and television for Bosniak Muslims and other “non-Serbs” to identify themselves with white armbands and to have white flags in front of their houses.

That day Satko was forced into the concentration camp of Omarska
Upon entry to the Omarska camp, Satko remembers on how people were searched, and beaten.

So many were overcrowded into such a small space, Satko says it was like “they were sardines packed into one another”.

He still has pains due to the beatings and horrific conditions
Arnesa ( @Rrrrnessa) remarks on the way Satko looked during his time at Omarska concentration camp. Gaunt, emaciated, frightened and starved.

“There is nobody who went through Omarska that didn’t get beaten and tortured” - Satko Mujagić.

People starved, were tortured, and got beaten repeatedly. At some point, Satko says: “there was no need to kill people as they were dying due to dysentery and starvation.”

Satko was marked for execution for the day after British Journalists @pennymitv @edvulliamy came to visit the camps and confront Serbian leadership over it.

The visit by the British journalists of the concentration camps saved his life.

“There was a continous attempt to conceal these crimes” @Rrrrnessa remarks as @Satko_M remembers how after the visit by the British journalists, the Serb forces attempted to force prisoners to lie about the conditions to Serbian Television.

The last victims of Omarska were 5 people, 3 of whom were women. They were sent off for execution on the eve of the camp closing; as the rest of the civilians being transferred to the other concentration camps such as Manjaca and Trnopolje.

Satko’s grandma is the oldest missing person in the region. He wishes to find her remains and put her to rest.

There are still many missing people from the Bosnian war whose remains have not be found. Each year, as more mass graves uncovered more are put to rest.
Satko says for him the worst is the continous denial of the facts that have happened and those who try to paint it as if he deserved the horrific conditions he was kept in and the continous attack s due to the fact the was a Bosniak Muslim.

#GenocideDenial
“What people want is justice, not revenge. Nobody wants revenge. Not one person.”

The Bosniak Muslim community in the Prijedor region has continued to fight for recognition of genocide and to build a memorial for all the civilians murdered there.

We invite our followers and viewers to join in the #WhiteArmBandDay and to take a photo of themselves wearing the White ArmBand as a way to memorialize all of the Bosniak Muslims who were persecuted due to their ethnicity and religion.
