Please share guys! As we continue to protest we must also organize thoroughly. We cannot remain defenseless! Having a weapon is not the only way to protect yourself. We can learn from the tactics used around the world. Some are included in this video: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CAx-oMvHJRm/?igshid=atdvdpcksu9p
1. Extinguish gas canisters with water bottles. Use metal bowls or traffic cones to snuff out the gas before it spreads.
2. Cover your face as much as possible. Use masks and goggles. Police will review footage from protests to identify individuals as targets for arrests. When moving as a large body, try covering yourselves with umbrellas facing up and out. Look for cameras and obstruct them.
3. Protect your body. Use hard hats or helmets for your head. Padding for your limbs. A life jacket can help protect you from rubber bullets at least. Plastic wrap to shield your bare skin from tear gas and pepper spray. A waterproof rain jacket or poncho work too.
4. Have shields. This is most important for the people who will end up on the front line. You can use garbage can lids, hard luggage, paddle boards, toilet seat covers, wood boards, layers of cardboard tapped together, etc.
5. If you are an organizer, create posters and informational 1-pagers with plans, safety tips, resources, etc. Share through your chats, messaging platforms, and consider airdrop or the android equivalent (but change your name on you phone profile).
6. Obtain phone numbers of local lawyers and bail funds that you can call for help if you gets arrested. Do not go out without this information at least!
7. If you are using public transit to travel to protest locations consider buying single use tickets as opposed to using a card that is registered to your name.
8. DON’T GIVE UP. This is not just about one or a few deaths, it’s about a system that needs to be broken. If you are a community leader/organizer, work with the people to create a list of demands. Let local officials know that the protests will stop when those demands are met.
Please share this thread and add any tips and tactics you can think of using the replies! And if you are able to bring extra supplies to protest to distribute, please do.
