Lautaro Martinez-And What he could bring[THREAD request by @Barcaesqued ]
The 22 year old has been heavily linked w/ the Catalan club, openly showing interest in him. After a brilliant season under Conte, he has indeed attracted big interest. What would his arrival for the Catalans mean?
Barça hoped to see in Griezmann a ST able to replace an ageing Luis Suarez, however, it didn't work. In Griezmann, the Catalans found more of another #10 instead of an actual #8. Of course, it's important to note down Lautaro'a profile, first things first.
It's hard to determine how Lautaro behaves with a #10 alongside him, as there's no #10 in Conte's Inter: Lautaro plays in a double strike formation alongside Romelu Lukaku, thus being unclear how he'd cope w/ Leo or any #10
The Argentinian stands out to his intelligence, despite using his imposing physique to win duels in the box. The 22 year old liked to stay in the box while he also tends to drop deep to advance the ball to the final third. With his high IQ, it seemed as he'd do well.
If Luis Suarez likes to make space for Leo, Lautaro has done it at Inter, too. When in the box, the Argentinian prefers to drift to the wide zone of the box to make space in the centre for his partners ( In this case, Lukaku-At Barcelona, Leo)
Suarez has lately been little involved concerning the build up while he defensively hasn't contributed lately. However, Lautaro indeed can be given defensive duties. However, he himself stands out more in the box.
However, Lautaro, just like any human, isn't perfect. Before we jump into the 111M price, there are a few problems.
Firstly, deep blocks. Barcelona are forced to play against them almost every single week. In other words, it's important to be able to play against deep blocks.
Alas, when playing against them, Lautaro has struggled. He often finds himself isolated in the box thus being ineffective against rather deep blocks-As there's no space he can exploit between the lines, who are closed. As such, Barcelona's current problem wouldn't be fixed.
Lautaro isn't much of a creator, either. So when he doesn't finish, he doesn't create that many opportunities, except when he attracts defenders to him. As such, Lautaro isn't the prototype striker either.
Even worse, it's hard to imagine how much playtime he'd gain. If Barcelona were to use him in a 4-3-3, there would be virtually no width. If Messi-Lautaro-Griez play, the width will only come from Alba & Semedo, who have been insufficient this season for this role.
If that's trio isn't played, one out of Leo, Griez, Suarez or Lautaro will have to be benched, thus having too many strikers. Lastly, an enormous price tag of 111M€ is problematic to Barcelona's economy. It's up to you to decide whether you'd be prepared to pay the price.
