Too many white people live in a bubble. Whether that’s a function of regionality (like where i was raised) or simple close-mindedness, or anything in between, i IMPLORE you to open your mind. It’s not hard, just use your eyes and your ears.
If you don’t know where to start, and for some reason have no POC voices you have been exposed to in your timelines, i figure I can share some documentary films I’ve seen that have deeply affected me and taught me more than you’ll ever learn in school.
The first that jumps to mind.

LET THE FIRE BURN. The outrageous story of the mayor of Philadelphia waging war on MOVE, a Black Liberation org. Along with his police force they dropped a literal bomb on them and burnt down a neighborhood.
The next is Ken Burns’ THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE.

Familiar villain of this story is our current president, who made a huge public push to try AND EXECUTE these innocent boys. Ava Duvernay’s WHEN THEY SEE US dramatises this story profoundly well.
THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE taught me so much I didn’t know about the movement, and how the white establishment brutally brought it to an end.
THE NIGHT JAMES BROWN SAVED BOSTON was another story I never knew about (I moved to Boston as an adult) but blew me away. Boston, the famously “liberal” city was segregated much longer than the south.

PS this is also just a fantastic concert film as well
A good complement to the Black Power Mixtape, THE BLACK PANTHERS: VANGUARD OF THE REVOLUTION dives in specifically on that one group.
WHO KILLED MALCOM X just came out this year on Netflix but serves as a compelling mystery story while painting the larger picture of the man’s life and development as a public figure. Learned a lot here.
Another recent Netflix piece: THE TWO KILLINGS OF SAM COOKE

Cooke has been remembered by history as not making his voice heard much during the civil rights movement but this doc sheds light on how the govt feared, targeted, and ultimately killed him.
This is all I have the time for now but my god do you notice a pattern? Just reading these synopses should shock you out of your bubbles.
