Recruit police officers.

Getting stuck in with things while 'off duty'?

Your student ID card is not a warrant card - showing your student ID will not suffice that you are a police officer. Someone could get away with giving you a kicking if you put hands on them
depending on your stage of training you have no idea how to lawfully arrest someone. You have limited idea on use of force. You start going down that avenue with someone whilst off duty you are on your own if it goes wrong - you haven't been trained.
If you see something you think requires police attention ring 999. You are a professional witness. Unless someone is getting an absolutely battered and you think it is safe to intervene do so. Otherwise stay back and observe and await police
You getting involved in a situation will undoubtedly make things worse.

You also have to know what you're arresting for. There has to be an offence. You need to know the difference between s5 S4A s4 of the public order act, for example.

You do have any person powers
Of arrest, s24A PACE. I suggest you use those until you know what you are doing.

You are a recruit up until you get signed off with single patrol status. Then you are probationer.

The Job will not thank you for getting stuck in to a squabble in a shop.
If you do believe a crime has taken place you should really be recording it. But wait! You can't! Because you do not know how too.

You are a recruit police officer. It carries a lot of power and responsibility. If you do something wrong whilst off duty you will
be held to the same account of a substantive PC.

See something. Ring 999. And observe.
