Thread: I’m glad @BritishMuslimTV have issued a statement that adequately (albeit very late) apologises and takes action on the two presenters that were caught saying things unbefitting any Muslim man.
There has been a great many discussions around this that have been taking place on chat groups. One of the things that struck me most though, was the way in which many were calling this locker room talk, as a way of saying the matter wasn’t as serious as it was being made out.
When asking them if their wife of sister worked there, would they be ok with them going back in the next day to do a mic check or just working with these men. They all said no.
I explained that this base position wasn’t anything to do with justice, it was just about their personal ego. They would feel personally affronted, rather than affronted by the general acceptability of such behaviour. That isn’t what ethics look like, it’s just ego.
Part of the reason why accountability based on ethics is important, is that it’s for collective goodness, not just individual reparation. We need to move beyond acting based on personal relations alone, as that does nothing for wider society.
