/ Excuse me, Twitter, there's a couple of things I want to say. I got made financially weak a few years back, facing actual destitution, due to some decisions I made that I'm never going into here or anywhere, but trust me, I'm a few freelance gigs away from living in a bin.
/ I will be for a few years. I make it work, though, I get enough to get by & I'm getting benefits right now to get through this pandemic. I'm not complaining or asking for help or pity. I got it. But now, the backdrop for all this seems to be the actual end of the world.
/ I am beyond disgusted, angry & impotent over the murders of people like #BellyMujinga & #GeorgeLloyd #BlackLivesMatter & over govts handling of this pandemic ~ we have been failed by our idiot leaders, capitalism is winning - charity, kindness & education is all we have left.
/ so I understand why @modernistwitch from @Bandcamp suggested musicians donate their income on Friday 5th June to bail funds. I just can't afford to. I wish I could, I'd give that money to Belly Mujinga's family in a heartbeat. To the upsurge in lockdown domestic violence
/ against women, to families of victims of police violence, to hidden, suffering, oppressed voices everywhere. But what I think this itself is a tool of that capitalism. It exploits us all, convinces us that small broke powerless individuals can save people & the planet.
/ it places that weight on all our shoulders, so we cower & cry & feel guilt & do small things, like walk around our gardens to raise money for the NHS, which is not a charity, and then demonizes us for suggesting that shouldn't be necessary.
/ I'll use the right bag or the right straw & feel awful every time I fail, but what if it isn't my individual responsibility to save everything? What if our leaders showed compassion & cared for the things we do? What if a money obsessed 52% of population didn't get to decide?
/ what if instead we broke things & demanded that corporations paid out? I could give £25 & then go another month behind on my very late water bill or we could demand amazon paid tax & gave £250,000 without skipping a beat. What if we voted for politicians who make that happen?
/ I am upset I can't fix the world & that's what Johnson & Trump exploit. Capitalism requires meat for the grinder. Don't ask little people to fix big problems. We can be kind & strong & loud & stay home & not burn our own houses down like Killer Mike says.
/ Killer Mike, who also said we should plot, plan, strategise, organise, and mobilise & I agree. Beautifully put. Let's do that. I can't give £25 on Friday, but if you can, do. I'll share some links to help. I won't burn my own house down but I will riot for free.
/ Vote for people powerful enough to bring about the change you want to see. Educate yourself. Teach people with a tiny worldview, a narrow perspective. Call them out, show them what they are doing & why you think it's wrong. Not just online, in real life. Make tiny changes.
/ follow @TatianaTMac & @ElizaTalks & @SholaMos1 & @ObiomaUgoala. Donate to Belly Mujinga's family. Donate to @RefugeCharity. Donate to @Framework_HA. Donate to @ActionAidUK. Donate to @amnesty. Donate to @Blklivesmatter. Donate to @safelives_. Donate to @FiLiA_charity
/ Then be angry that you have to. Ask your MP what they are doing to fix those big problems & when they lie or are silent or wrong, vote them out. It's the only real power you have & the time has come for *everyone* to use it.
/ Let this be George Floyd & Belly Mujinga's legacy, that everyone finally got angry enough to make real changes. I can't afford to donate, myself. But I can try to amplify voices & messages & I can riot, in my own, quiet way. Thanks for reading. Enjoy the weekend, if you can.
