[THREAD] Egyptians, let’s acknowledge our issues too:

‘In 2013, black Egyptian filmmaker Nada Zatouna was refused service in a pharmacy in Cairo because of her skin colour.

"I don't take anything from people who are not white," the pharmacist told her.’ https://english.alaraby.co.uk/english/features/2015/7/23/being-black-in-egypt
”[A] group of Egyptian teenagers crowded around [two Sudanese sisters]. The boys taunted them, calling them “slave” and other slurs. Then they tried to rip off Ekhlas' clothes.
“Ali narrated how she faced verbal harassment on the streets of Cairo... not only [by] men, as she also met discrimination from her own sex... She said that some people compared her to “the night” while others [said] that she is very beautiful “even though she is dark.”
“In Dec 2005, Egypt police attacked a [Sudanese refugee camp] in Cairo who were protesting their treatment. In front of TV cameras, at least [28-100] refugees were killed, 100s others were injured, imprisoned or deported. There was little public protest.” https://www.npr.org/2011/02/07/133562448/the-root-egypts-race-problem
“[In 2017], prominent Nubian activist Gamal Sorour died in detention. Sorour was among 25 Nubians arrested for staging a peaceful protest “demanding the return of Nubians to their ancestral lands.”
“I want to tell them of a Sierra Leonean man who was in Cairo to study at al-Azhar University who told me of being spat at in Cairo streets. Or of the teenage South Sudanese girl taunted by an Egyptian woman on the metro who tried to grab her nose and mouth until I intervened.”
“Egyptian comedy show “Azmi we Ashgan” (or “Azmi and Ashgan”), featured the lead actors donning blackface and using racist language. The program, which also aired in 2018, adopted bigoted typecasts of black servants speaking in broken Arabic and practising sorcery.”
“Actress & comedian Shaima Saif [was] under fire for wearing blackface on prank TV show, Shaklabaz. During the episode... Saif’s character portrayed a Sudanese woman on a minibus, annoying passengers, attempting to steal their phones, & drinking alcohol.” https://insidearabia.com/egypts-blackface-sketch-and-racist-attitudes-in-the-middle-east/
More examples are welcome. There are too many to count. If you’re moved by #BlackLivesMatter , you can represent it at home too, even by simply fixing the attitudes within your own family or friend group. And more by putting an end to it when you see it.
Here is another instance of blatant racist murder if you’re still acting blind.

Thanks to @leilaaelsahhar for sharing this. So many of us have seen things like this happen, but very few try to stop it.

Thanks @kushitie for showing me this & @AbzCaptures for compiling. A deep look into how racism is ingrained in Arab pop culture. https://twitter.com/abzcaptures/status/1123037966019039232?s=21 https://twitter.com/abzcaptures/status/1123037966019039232
