There is a stark contrast of enforcement responses to anti-lockdown #protests where armed white civilians stormed gov’t buildings & others are on camera shoving police vs. nationwide #protests against police violence, where targeted arrests & use of force are deployed by police. https://twitter.com/eoinhiggins_/status/1265485017767124995
Local police are using tear gas, rubber bullets, & brutality at #Minneapolis #protests & the National Guard was just called in. The Nat’l Guard were not called to suppress anti-lockdown protests in Michigan, Ohio, etc. I think you can figure out why. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/19/upshot/not-just-ferguson-national-guard-has-a-long-history-with-civil-unrest.html
I’m reminded of when the Nat’l Guard killed 4 unarmed students at Kent State University (May 4, 1970) during anti-war protests. Nixon justified by saying: “This should remind us all once again that when dissent turns to violence it invites tragedy.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1197676
Historically the Nat’l Guard has responded to sites of racial violence or uprisings, like in #Oklahoma, during the #TulsaRaceMassacre where guards deputized other white citizens & rounded up black people in internment camps, facilitating the burning & looting of black households.
The “Tulsa Race Riot Commission,” which investigated the massacre & its aftermath, documented in its final report the role of the Nat’l Guard during the massacre. Eyewitness accounts confirm the troops culpability also in Mary Jones Parrish’s book, “Events if the Tulsa Disaster.”
Oklahoma state, city of Tulsa, & the Tulsa Police Department’s culpability in the #TulsaRaceMassacre is also documented in a new @hrw report - “The Case for Reparations in Tulsa: A Human Rights Argument.” https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/05/29/case-reparations-tulsa-oklahoma
The world is watching, and taking note of law enforcement actions and military intervention in this critical moment in our history. #GeorgeFloyd #AhmaudArbery #BreonnaTaylor #BlackLivesMatter
