White women are far more than bystanders in active racism. They’ve been contributors for a long time and if you don’t believe me here are just a few examples I can remember off the top of my head (1/8)
Slave ownership was not an exculsively white male dominated position. In fact, white women owned slaves in high numbers and took pride in it. Stephanie Jones-Rogers explores this in her book which I have not been able to read yet but I’m certain is necessary (2/8)
White women actively campaigned to maintain school segregation, often in ways that sheltered their image as being non-racist yet still contributed to Jim Crow style society that remains in tact throughout school districts to this day. (3/8)
Suffragettes have always been presented as heroes in the fight for equality when in reality their goals were selfish. “Votes for women” excludes a very necessary adjective, one that would make it more clear their actual intentions. Equality for us and not for you (4/8)
Blaming black people for crimes they did not commit or are not culpable in is something that has incarcerated and killed countless innocent people. Emmett Till was lynched in 1955 after a white woman accused him of offending her. Her actions caused his death (5/8)
This thread could last forever, and I wish the tweets could each be longer to bring the points across clearer but what I’m trying to say is that white women are not innocent in the racism of today, as they weren’t in the past. (6/8)
We should feel uncomfortable, criticize our ancestors, criticize ourselves in our own short comings and internalized racism. We have to take responsibility for these things because no one else can (7/8)
Donate if you can, sign petitions, vote for the right things, educate yourself. I’m Canadian but that doesn’t stop me from having to take responsibility to learn about the world around me and what I can do better and it shouldn’t for you either (8/8)
