"The successor to the smartphone will be something that doesn’t just merge AR and VR but make the distinction irrelevant" ~ @benedictevans
so next is ubiquitous computing
so next is ubiquitous computing

As we have all seen the interest Apple has show for AR via ARKit, LiDAR and for VR via acquisition of NextVR and couple of more startups which worked on headsets that can do both VR and AR, it's pretty clear that they are getting ready for the next big thing
If I am right I am pretty sure Apple might not even say it's it's VR or AR or Spatial Computing, they can position this next big platform as just something else. Ubiquitous Computing? (would make sense).
Also why Apple should be the one leading this new computing paradigm?
· quality UI & UX
· content
· strong foundation (ARKit)
· best in class hardware
· app store policies
· less fragmentation
· resources (money, talent, culture)
· brand value and trust

I can think of no other company that has all these traits, some might have some but not all
also Apple is just not planning for the ubiquitous computing, Oculus too and also many others like Niantic, Magic Leap, etc.

it's going to be an interesting 5-10 years from now, ultimately the entire point of ubiquitous computing would be or will be communication
