The story to be watching must be the one below. Because it’s the umbrella gateway for every other story. A thread on Twitter #news curation, posting and #personalbranding. I got a few whatapps recently from people I really look up to, complimenting a tweet or 2 and podcasts. 1/n https://twitter.com/thedemcoalition/status/1266314011039105024
2/n these give a huge dopomine hit for sure, but a second after you think: jeez these people read what I post. Oh no! And you struggle to remember all the less measured or controversial tweets you’ve throw around. So I’ve thought about what #Twitter should be for and why
3/n there is some truly amazing information insight and comedy on here. People are giving away goldust for free. Twitter is super valuable and Dorsey knows this. So you must be on here. The trick is to curate the people you follow. And then you don’t need anymore news. It’s here.
4/n Then you think: but a few people follow me.
. What am I actually doing here? Few are looking for a public fight or to abuse. Those people you need to block ASAP. There is no “good look” for you in engaging. None. Most smart people post as some form of personal branding.

5/n. You are showing thru your posts what and who you read,
And what you know. How smart and funny you are. That’s ok. But it’s a very fine line to do that elegantly. Here are the pitfalls. 1) forgetting that not all who follow you care about your football team. Most don’t.

6/n. 2) people may enjoy your posts but only in small doses. 3) people can smell out virtue signalling and fishing for compliments. 4) “oh god, yes we’ve seen you’ve got your podcast out. Fuck off” 5) people who follow you for football maybe have no interest in macroeconomics
7/n. You get the idea. So what are my axioms for here; none of which I manage to follow btw. It’s so hard I find. A) try and give yourself a limit of tweets and comments a day. Say 5. Max 10. B) before you send out each tweet use the “would this make (s)he wince or sigh” test!!
8/n the people you use for the test should be those you respect the most. Try it: it’s so effective. But it’s not easy when you want to just drift into “mischief, comedy or a put-down”. C) realise that people, including your family, are judging you on your acts on here.
9/n. D) Realise that you will not change anyone’s mind on here. If you want a long debate take it offline. No one wants to see a 30m tweet exchange. Not even if you are Socrates. E) don’t force it. People follow you coz they already think you are worth it. LESS IS MORE.
10/n. Very few of us, @ttmygh is one, aren’t guilt of the worst of the deadly sins. Vanity. There are some great supersmart people being sucked into ego driven mid life crises on here. And need to be heard. Im guilty but at least I see it and try and adjust. So Trump and Dorsey?
11/11. Trump is a baby complaining coz people call his BS. But like in most things in life it’s not black and white. Twitter is playing funny games. Getting people unfollowed it doesn’t like. Promoting jack’s mates. ITS ACTING LIKE ANY OTHER MEDIA CO THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN!
