In California, under the Emergency Zero Bail Schedule, most misdemeanors and low-level felonies should be "zero bail" and be an immediate release. Things to watch for then during protests: (1/5)
1) Upcharging - arresting agency will increase the charge in order to avoid the zero bail schedule (so they keep ppl in jail. Like a nonsense misdemeanor resisting arrest magically becomes a felony assault on a police officer). (2/5)
Because the average bail amount in CA is 50K, it prices out most community bail funds who, since they can't pay the full amount, don't (understandably) want to line the pockets of a bail bonds company and pay the 10% to a parasitic industry. (3/5)
2)Another reality is jails (if not watched) can try to avoid the automatic release mandate of zero bail - detaining ppl longer intentionally.
-- All this means expanded exposure to COVID-19 outbreak. (4/5)
So -- press police chiefs about not arresting and not intentionally up-charging. And, press Sheriffs to honor the Zero Bail release mandates.
In this moment, with this virus, it is a possible death sentence.
