okay i haven’t seen one of these going around lately, forgive me if there has been, but in no particular order:

STAYING SAFE AT A PROTEST YOU KNOW IS GOING TO BE DANGEROUS
pre-thread disclaimer: i’ve been doing this for years, this isn’t the end-all be-all of advice, these are just some tips that i think are helpful if u don’t already know
1) Tell someone you’re going.

If you can, don’t go alone. Let them know what time you plan to be back, and how long to wait before looking for you.
2) Bring water.

I would say bring as much as you can comfortably carry, especially with the widespread use of tear gas. It won’t soothe as much as milk will but it will flush the chemicals faster.
3) Know your rights.

The laws differ slightly from state to state. It might be helpful to google “ACLU protest rights [your state]”. They have good, reliable resources.
4) Wear shoes you can run in.

With the way things are going, this isn’t going to be your run-of-the-mill sit in youre going to. This is a rebellion. You need to be prepared to protect your own safety.
5) Write an emergency contact number somewhere on your body.

This was one I picked up from Ferguson protestors. Make sure it’s somewhere reachable, like a forearm.
7) Have an exit strategy

Know where your car is parked/what train line you’re taking. Have more than one route planned. Communicate this with whoever you’re with.
8) Cover yourself FULLY

This is for multiple reasons. Reason 1: you should be wearing a face mask bc there is still a global pandemic, tho it may seem irrelevant at this time. Reason 2: Tear gas sticks to sweat, mucus, saliva, anything it can. Do not let it stick to your body!!
8 cont) Give it clothing to stick to. Reason 3: You don’t want to run the risk of being identified through footage and facing reprecussions.
9) Be vigilant.

Police know by now that we’ll be on the look out for their shoes. Watch what you say around people you don’t know. Look out for the people around you. Help who you can.
10) Above all else, stay safe.

If smthn is going wrong... your life has value. We need you to be able to fight on. As I said before, help who you can, then get out. Esp black protestors - you are at more risk than anyone else. Non-black & esp white protestors, it is our job to
10 cont) put ourselves in places it is too dangerous for black protestors to go. Look out for each other.
