The National Cabinet concept is full of risks (more later), but there are two things that have made it a vehicle for relatively good governance during this period. One, is that it has made expert advice central to the process.
And the reason this has happened is because, two, the National Cabinet has rendered the LNP backbench irrelevant, or at least, limited the ability of various right wing denialists to undermine the various experts.
This means that there is a real opportunity to do something about climate change under this process. IN the same way public health expertise has been able to be heeded during Covid, perhaps climate expertise can be acted on in a way that is simply impossible within the LNP.
The overall risk is that a lack transparency, secrecy, with a faction of technocrats & senior politicians inherent in the design of the NC, sidelines more democratic processes, including the views of citizens.
Something to look at going forward.
