Since I'm already on the theme of Student Government, let's get into the SGA statement that was released only after DAYS of pressure, here ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vSdUA6-rNHTLXBV9rz0oO65SdEG79NK3TJwfD0tGpvvhQyu_0_L2PewyCY3FS0P51xFKvazPDR5xOD7/pub):
First of all did the protests honoring the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arbery, and other victims of state violence not merit their own statement?
Did we really have to disrespect their memory by just giving them a paragraph and then moving to discuss racism in NYU Greek life? There should have been TWO SEPARATE STATEMENTS, one addressing police violence and one discussing the racism of the Lambda fraternity.
To add insult to injury we couldn't honor the memory of those we've lost and SAY THEIR NAMES? I know good and god damn well you were chanting it at protests, so I'm not sure why we're being shy now and dishonoring their memory like this..
Other universities’s student governments took the time to offer resources and support to their Black community members. They placed pressure on stakeholders in admin positions to cut ties with the police to further ensure the safety of Black students.
To be blunt: this statement is lazy and insulting. It doesn't convey any support & is loaded with empty buzzwords.
Not only does this statement fundamentally fail our student community, it actively places blame on protesters with its deliberate choice to include a line "condemning violence."
I cannot believe that our new student government chair is more concerned with protesting methods than the violence that began these protests. How dare you try to further police how Black people are responding to their own oppression. Go to hell
Not to mention that the individual that called the police on George Floyd was DESI. And yet, we haven’t heard anything from our new chair discussing a plan for combating the anti-blackness that is ENDEMIC to non-black communities.
ESPECIALLY when the constituency that you represent is South Asian students. This is just so shameful.
