Proposed Change: A thread.. a conversation.. our mission.
Let me start off by saying I don’t have it all figured out. This thread is just words and doesn’t mean much at the end of the day. Bc anyone can (and probably will) talk… we need real ones that will walk.
Currently, I’m doing everything I can to be one of the changes/leaders our people so desperately need (“one of” because I know there’s plenty reading doing their part to be the same… orrr maybe not reading but that’s okay).
Anyways, I feel there’s always a good time to start the conversation and build. Hopefully, we can come together and be the difference sooner than later.
This thread is me voicing my current thoughts on the change I believe our law enforcement system needs. Feel free to challenge or share your thoughts at any point.
Obviously, I know I’m not gonna be able to dive into everything and could be wrong but here I go regardless… I just want change made.
Problem 1: We have unethical, racist and immoral people serving as police officers. Currently, there’s no way to effectively identify and weed out these individuals. (Racism)
Problem 2: These unethical and racist officers have the freedom to engage in whatever they deem a threat using whatever technique/weapon they choose. Often letting their racial bias play into their decisions, leading to deaths of unarmed, innocent black men in this case.
(Too much freedom)
Problem 3: We as Americans are not effectively taught our rights handling police officers or what officers can/can’t do to us and under what circumstances, often resulting in fear and impotence. (Lack of knowledge)
Bottom Line: The system is broken.
Reality: This is not every cop. I believe the majority of our police officers are courageous, loving, and hard working men and women. The truth of the matter is that one murdered innocent, unarmed black man is one too many. The system is broken.
Proposed Change: Create a system that requires our police officers to receive permission before pursuing perceived threats. This would most likely look like officers calling into a committee describing the situation at or near the scene.
The committee would then give permission (or not) and if so, what techniques/weapons they are permitted to use.
Thoughts: Would most likely need to send video evidence, a live stream, or picture to verify situation. The committee would have to contain reasonable, ethical people.. not just other cops (probably need somebody from the church if you ask me, a lawyer, etc).
Would need to be documented by committee. And process would have to be done in a timely manner, 30 seconds to a minute?
Moving forward: Once officer receives permission and approved techniques/weapons, if they operate outside of approved parameters, they can be tried as criminals.
Additional change: require officers to vocalize these approved parameters in some form/fashion to citizen or allow citizen the right to ask. Many ways to efficiently implement this
Truthfully, I believe, there are one too many murderers/criminals being protected by a badge and uniform.
If this was to be implemented, I predict a lot of officers would disapprove bc it strips freedom.. a lot of them probably angry. I’m sure there are other reasons.
But then, I believe that could show us our true protectors and defenders.
Trust is broken. The badge has been diminished. Change is needed.
Trust is broken. The badge has been diminished. Change is needed.
Moving forward: begin teaching our youth America’s legal system by at least ninth and through 12th grade. Empower people by showing them their rights, what people have the authority to do and what they don’t. (Also should be teaching taxes but that’s another conversation)
Celebrate the honest, loving officers. Protect the innocent, unarmed black man. Clearly, everyone needs to be protected but I think you get the point.
Proposed Change.
Your thoughts? How do we make this better and save the next life?
