there's some misinformation spreading on who jim jones was so here's a brief thread addressing who he was so y'all may understand why the sampling of his speech is bad. pls retweet to spread the information and let me know if I got anything wrong!
jim jones was a CULT LEADER, he founded a cult called people's temple founded around his communist ideology. he was manipulative and abusive and targetted people of color, the poor, people with problems with addiction, etc. and orchestrated a massacre
although not all of his congregation were black or poc, it should be noted that he ABSOLUTELY targetted the black community by promising an integrated community. he actually worked toward integration in the US which is why poc felt safe with him. this was a recruitment tactic
he eventually moved his congregation to Guyana and formed a community called Jonestown. it was marketed as a sanctuary where everyone could live in harmony regardless of race/ethnicity/socioeconomic status
when a congressman flew to Jonestown to investigate human rights allegations against jones, he asked if any members of Peoples' Temple would like to leave the congregation and fly back to the US with him. the group were shot while boarding their plane
that night jones ordered everyone to drink poison-laced punch (starting with the children!), leading to the mass massacre of hundreds of people. there were armed guards who forced people to kill their families and themselves. they had no true agency in the matter
i can't begin to list all of the atrocities and crimes committed by jones: sexual abuse, assault, manipulation, etc. this only scratches the surface. if you're curious, i encourage you to research on your own
we should not romanticize this man or his words. he was an evil cult leader and a mass murderer. please do not trivialize this situation
anyway, i suggest you email the company and then move on. there's no need for discussion or for you to try and defend him. and PLEASE continue to focus on #BlackLivesMatter
