although this isn’t the main issue at the moment, here’s a thread of victims of police in australia #BlackLivesMatter
warning !!! aboriginal and torres strait islander peope are to be reminded that this thread contains peope who have died
just a reminder that 400 indigenous people have died in custody since 1991. these numbers were even higher in the 1980s. mistreatment in prisons against aboriginals is very common. just a psa !! i might not put their faces in these. i’m not very sure about aboriginal customs —
and i don’t want to cause any problems. please inform me if you don’t like what’s in here as an aboriginal australian, and i’ll delete it !! i’m just trying to spread awareness.
kumanjayi walker
he was a 19 year old man who was shot and killed by police. supposedly he ‘lunged at police with a knife’. regardless they opened an investigation and the police officer was charged with murder.
- they were unable to get him medical treatment because the closest hospital had closed down. it took them 10 hours to confirm him dead.
ms dhu (not her full name due to the fact i want to respect aboriginal customs)
a 22 year old was detained by police in 2014 because she had an outstanding arrest warrant for not paying fines. i can’t fit all the writing in this box so here’s a screenshot of an article
cameron doomadgee(mulrunji)
died in a police cell. his death caused civic disturbances for years. the police officer was questioned and found to have many charges as an officer, such as such as assault, drink driving, and things that went against the racial discrimination act
john pat
he was 16 years old when he was killed by WA police. in 1983 4 police officers and 1 aboriginal aide got drunk and began a fight with an aboriginal man. john pat joined to help his friend, and subsequently got hit, fell back, and hit his head on the railway.
most recent case i’ve found: veronica marie nelson walker
she was arrested for shoplifting, and the news reports she had died from drug withdrawal. but inmates have informed her family that she had been heard screaming for help. there has still been no conviction
tanya day
a 55 year old woman arrested for being drunk in public. she was left alone in her cell for 4 hours, although she fell repeatedly, nobody helped. she died with catastrophic brain injuries. the police officers could have helped.
this list could go on for so long, but many deaths are undocumented and not looked into. although police officers are a lot less likely to use guns in australia, it doesn’t stop them using and abusing their power.
stats:
- many deaths are labelled with “medical care required but not given” and this has risen in the past few years
- it is seen thag aboriginal women are less likely to receive medical treatment and police officers are less likely to have followed all procedures with them
i will add more to this thread over time but please remember #BlackLivesMatter EVERYWHERE in the world. we want equality for all
