journalism schools across the country, which are predominately ran by white administration, teach a very inaccurate notion of objectivity to their students, essentially pushing this idea of false equivalency onto them.
as journalists, it’s our job to hold the powerful accountable. this includes exposing injustices in this country without equating the oppressed to the oppressor.

it also means listening to the communities you serve and not giving voices to the wrong people.
and another thing that’s REALLY problematic is that this idea of objectivity has become so skewed that many percieve identity as bias. that’s literally the reason why journalism is filled with white men — they’re seen as the blank slate, the norm.
journalists of color are discouraged from pursuing this field because they’re taught that their identities....that who they are....hinders their reporting. when actually, it’s the completr opposite.
journalists of color have an advantage in that they’re able to better serve their communities and report on them as fairly and accurately as possible.

that’s what real objectivity is.
