the end of May marks 4 years since the parrot rescue I volunteer with rescued 584 parrots from The World Parrot Refuge on Vancouver Island, a “sanctuary” for surrendered parrots that went terribly downhill due to the owner dying & taking in far too many birds
food dishes were never cleaned, there was apparently a huge layer of mould at the bottom of all of them, as you can see in the photos the cages weren’t clean either, there were mice and rats everywhere, the smell of ammonia was unbearable
tonnes of them had injuries from just free flying around with other larger birds (lovebirds were just flying around in the same area as cockatoos), many birds died before they were rescued, many were also stolen to be sold off, and the SPCA did nothing
and so our small rescue somehow managed to take those almost 600 birds and spend the hundreds of thousands of dollars on the necessary vet care (we only finally paid off that bill within the last 6 months), and now 4 years later we are down to about 60 remaining
Moral of the story is, stop breeding parrots, parrots do not make good pets, this is essentially where they eventually end up.
If you’re set on having a parrot, ADOPT. There are so many wonderful birds like these ones in need of homes, we don’t need to bring more into the world
today is world parrot day so I’ll add some stuff to this thread, heres a movie made about the WPR rescue

& here is the shelter’s website where you can learn more about the rescue and the birds and donate if you’re able! http://greyhavenbirds.com/
and just to reiterate the point of not buying birds and supporting breeders & to instead adopt, I want to talk about one of my favourite WPR birds, Babe!
One of the arguments I hear for going to a breeder for a parrot over a rescue bird is “rescue birds are difficult”
and so a baby bird that has no history would be “easy”. There’s so much wrong with that but the part that angers me the most is the assumption rescue birds are tainted and unadoptable - so many of those 600 birds from the WPR were immediately the nicest cuddly birds & despite-
all they had been through just wanted to be loved, however yes, there were also “difficult” birds, and one of those birds was Babe, a molluccan cockatoo. I didn’t know her back then but she was apparently super nasty, attacked everybody, everyone was scared of her
