I got in a screaming match @ a crowded chicago bar trying to explain Kaepernicks protest when he first knelt. They were a fellow liberal. This story isn’t to give me some “woke white girl” cred but to illustrate that EVEN LIBERALS have trouble breaking out of supremacy thinking
It’s natural for us to deflect and separate ourselves from “those” white people with the maga hats and the guns. But it is NOT helpful. I benefit from white supremacy and it’s institutionalization whether I claim it or not. How do I challenge myself into action to be a real ally?
How do I listen? And to whom? When does my white body stand as a barrier to protect the bodies and words of others? When do my white tears compel others to act? How do my white words trample the message of BLM activists? When do I speak and when do I shut the fuck up?
Thank you to @LeslieMac for speaking to Refinery29 (which informed the thought behind this thread) and for your continued activism.
