So, I just looked into the prosecuting attorney, Amy Sweasy. She has successfully prosecuted & convicted a police officer before. But the details are interesting...
Officer Mohamed Noor, a Somali immigrant, shot Justine Damond, an Australian immigrant, who called the cops to report a potential sexual assault. While parked in an alley, Noor’s partner panicked & pulled his gun after hearing a loud thump and seeing a figure approach. Noor shot.
The figure ending up being Damond. Both officers IMMEDIATELY began to attempt resuscitation techniques but were unsuccessful. Damond died on the scene. Noor was charged with third degree murder and second degree manslaughter almost 9 months after the killing.
Noor’s defense was that his partner had panicked and he did what he had been trained to in this situation. He profusely expressed remorse while prosecutors touted his jailing would be a Christmas gift. Noor was sentenced to over 10 years in prison in June 2019.
The differences are stark. First, there was no video evidence of Damond’s shooting. We can watch over 8 minutes of applied pressure to the neck (2 of which Floyd was unresponsive). This was not an approved or taught restraint technique — this was use of unjustified deadly force.
Additionally, Chauvin continued to apply pressure to the neck after he was informed that Floyd had no pulse. This proves that Chauvin demonstrated had no remorse or concern for George Floyd.
If you can lock up a black cop for killing a white woman he perceived as an imminent threat without video, why can’t you lock up a white cop for torturing and killing an unarmed & restrained black man on camera? The verdict of this case will determine how deeply rooted racism is.
ANOTHER STARK DIFFERENCE: Chauvin was on the force for almost 20 years with 18 complaints while Noor had been on for only 2 with no complaints on his record.
