When it comes to authentic costuming in a Western, Tombstone stands out as one of the better examples, and yet some of the choices made still baffle me. For example, would the groomsmen at a Rurale wedding all wear matching chaps? Are they afraid of thorny bushes in church?
These guys look like Vaqueros on a cattle drive, not guests at a formal event. I'm not an expert on Rurales so I'm awaiting a response from my friend who is (and who, by coincidence, appeared in Tombstone)
Like why not just have them wear sombreros and dress suits? They had to go out of their way to put them in matching chaps. I'm imagining all the groomsmen at a Friar Tux shop all trying them on.
My friend who is an expert on the Rurales (and who appeared in Tombstone) responded: "The rurales would not have worn chaps like those at all..."
..."And as much as I am fond of the movie, having spent my summer break that year working on it, the real Rurales would have made short work of those land pirates."
