Have talked w/countless neighbors in past 24 hours who hold multiple things true: fiercely want justice for #GeorgeFloyd, understand outcry yesterday that resulted in damages/destruction to numerous businesses even if don't agree, grieve losses deeply, hearts fixed on rebuilding.
So many are trying to make us choose right now for their bad faith agendas. I refuse the false choices. We condemn the killing of #GeorgeFloyd. We hurt to see damage & violence in our cities. We understand so much of it as a breaking point from crushing injustice. We will rebuild
My constituents today are telling me: while we saw some concerning SPPD actions, vast majority of night was ridden out as best as possible given circumstances & fierce insistence on de-escalation overall mattered greatly. Combined city expectation/policy w/community monitoring.
I'll just be very frank that many were pressuring our city to take an extremely harsh full law-and-order crackdown approach to managing the response & well, I continue to wholeheartedly disagree with you & today I believe we are in a far better position to rebuild b/c we did not.
I am brimming with thoughts & reflections from the last 30+ hours but haven't slept a lot. This thread encompasses some of the key updates I hoped to share with you for now after working around the clock with and for our city. My endless thanks to everyone who's been part of it.
