#NOW: On the fourth day of nationwide protests after the death of George Floyd, hundreds are setting out from DC’s U Street for a march toward the White House.

Their starting chant: “No justice, no peace.” Later, it’s “Derek Chauvin, third degree—fuck that, it’s first degree.”
In less than 10 minutes this four-block-long march has gone the two miles from their starting point on U St. to Penn Ave. The vast majority of the people I’m seeing here are masked up. Some even have face shields and respirators.
Flashpoint at the White House. A protester tried to jump the construction fence in Lafayette Park. Secret Service chased him into the march, threw him on the ground then led him away. Bottles thrown.
Crowd calling for a medic at the foot of the Treasury Annex where Secret Service carried their detainee. They’re worried he has a concussion. From the brief glimpse I got of him, he had blood dripping down his forehead. – at The White House
Back facing the White House where at least two American flags were just doused with lighter fluid and burnt. Secret Service are back to keeping their distance for the moment, but the mood here is fury and the atmosphere remains tense.
“Every last one of you knows a crooked cop and you do nothing because you’re fucking cowards,” a man yells at the Secret Service. “You’re complicit.” Another protester chimes in: “Fix the broken system.” – at The White House
People have managed to toss over the temporary barricades, they’re being pushed back by the Secret Service. More police arriving. Heating up fast outside the White House’s north lawn.
Secret Service are swooping forward to reset fallen barricades before protesters just throw them over again, it’s becoming a cycle where neither side is moving very far. At least two people are being cuffed behind a patrol car. – at The White House
Calmer now with loud and ceaseless chanting at the White House, among the shouts here: George Floyd, say his name/No morals, no peace/Stop killing us/I can’t breathe.

“None of us WANT to be here in the middle of a pandemic,” a protester yells out from the crowd behind me.
The hundreds still with this protest are marching away from the White House eastbound for the Capitol building. Pennsylvania Avenue is shut down for blocks but cars watching them pass are honking in support.

Out ahead are the Trump Hotel and the Justice Dept.
Two Capitol police cruisers were surrounded on the way up Independence Ave. Sirens blaring as dozens are standing in their way chanting hands up, don’t shoot.

Confrontation avoided after some of the march’s leaders asked people to keep moving. – at United States Capitol
The approach to the Capitol’s east side is sealed off. I see a few march leaders talking with police behind the barricades, I can’t hear over what but plenty of people are asking for access to the plaza which is normally open to the public.
They couldn’t negotiate access to the east front plaza. Instead they’ve chosen to hold a vigil for Floyd with their phone lights raised as candles beneath the Capitol before moving on.
A hundred or so protesters are continuing to Eastern Market which is another mile down Pennsylvania, but the crowd is starting to thin for the first time since they started way back on U Street.

With that I’m heading out. Last view: “Rebellion is as American as racism.”
