Protesting Tech Tips from a Software Engineer:

- Disable fingerprint/face unlock on your phones (cops don't need a warrant for those, but they do for your password).
- Wear a face mask so facial recognition software can't ID you automatically (Wear a face mask anyway).
- Turn off geotagging for your photos. Cops can use the geolocation metadata to place you at the scene of the crime.
- Disable location services for all apps. For example, Google Maps by default tracks your location 24/7.
- Better yet - turn off your phone, or leave it in a signal-blocking pouch to make sure you are safe.
- Don't film felony's - people will use the footage to try and ID the protesters
- If you do choose to film/stream, try not to catch fellow protestors’ faces.
- Make sure your phone is charged in case of an emergency - Bring a rechargeable battery.
- Don't talk about things on your app.
- Don't bring your ID.
- If you need to chat online about something illegal, use an End to End Encrypted (E2E) chat service, like Signal.
- NEVER chat about what you're doing on Twitter/Insta/FB/Whatever. These all are unencrypted and they share chat logs with the gov.
- Wear shapeless, black clothing to become anonymous.
- Write down the Legal Aid Society's contact number in sharpie (e.g. on your forearm): 212-577-3300.
