In happier news. I can finally say I got a promotion. While it's #APAHM
still I want to talk about my journey to and in #gamedev and how my background has played into my life. If you are an #AsianAmerican and are interested in #gamedev please reach out to me. 1/

it's not hard to see that the industry is still largely cishet white. so one thing I want to do while I am still here is I want to build bridges and bring voices into this industry.
it's a common joke that we're all taught to be doctors, lawyers, (anything but gamedev) 2/

I didn't want medicine I didn't want law. I played the fuck out of video games(do this). I stayed up all night playing video games (don't do this, it's not healthy). I failed classes playing video games (don't do this, really don't)
I was lucky. I was privileged to get in.
I was lucky. I was privileged to get in.
I was lucky I applied to a job at the right time when the company was expanding at the right time. I was and still am privileged because my APPEARANCE allows me to be smarter than what I am. The fact that I am Asian automatically means "I am smart" 4/
oh my parents didn't like it, i told them the original rate ($10/hour as a QA tester) and they were worried. They didn't like my decision (I was in my mid 20s at this time) They doubted me. They always asked me "打電動能夠吃飯嗎?" Will playing video games feed you? 5/
7 years in this industry I love I say "Yes, yes it can." Early years it was hard. this is a brutal, competitive industry. It's not a pathway that your parents will want you to take. But the one word I took away from a speech was "Passion" 6/
Whatever the fuck you do, you need to have Passion for it. You need to love it. That's why we live, that's why #gamedevs do what we do. We love our work, we love everything we do. and I know there are lots of #BIPOC out there who are talented and want to work in #gamedev 7/
Your elders do not define your passion, your filial piety does not determine your passion. You do.
So again, if you are #AsianAmerican #BIPOC reach out to me, connect with me. Because I'm still climbing this ladder in this industry. I'm going to climb as high as I can. 8/

The higher I climb the more ladders and ropes I'm gonna put out to bring the inclusivity and diveristy into #gamedev. because I fucking love my job, I love games, and this place needs more voices.
done with my soap box. now.
