Here at the protest against police brutality at Detroit Police Deparment Headquarters. Protesters were yelling, “No justice, no peace. No racist police.” I’d estimate a good 100 or more people are here and more are walking up with signs. DPD is actually passing out PPE.
Detroit City Councilwoman @MsMarySheffield is here addressing the crowd. “The way in which this country values Black lies in unacceptable. I’m tired of marching, asking, and crying.” One of the most vocal community leaders in Detroit.
DPP has pushed the protesters into the parking lot of the HQ. Crowd got larger and was blocking Third Street. I’d estimate that a few hundred have shown up to voice their opinions. Everything is 100% peaceful now.
The crowd is mixed with Black and white supporters. Lauren Wasiak, Kaleigh Kuhns, Maggie Kuhns came down from Oakland County to support. They even quoted former Black Panther and political activist Angela Davis.
Someone out here as a sign that says “Remember Aiyana.” May 16, 2010, Aiyana Jones-Stanley, 7, was killed by Detroit Police Officer Joseph Weekley. DPD raided her home on Lillibridge on the city’s Eastside looking for a suspect in the home. The Suspect was her father.
Protesters have taken to the streets of Detroit now, leaving DPD HQ and now are marching down West Lafayette by the Federal Courthouse toward Campus Martius. Cars have even tried to join in. DPD has provided an escort on the route. Not sure where they are headed next.
The marchers keep screaming “Take the streets.” DPD wants them on the sidewalk. They have flooded Woodward Avenue headed north near the Nike store. DDOT is trapped and cars and honking for them to move. Dr. King took this route in reverse in 1963 during the Walk to Freedom.
Bunch of signs out here in support of #GeorgeFloyd, #BreonnaTaylor, #AuhmadArbery, #TrayvonMartin, and the countless of other Black bodies that have become victim of police brutality and death. Protesters are headed north on Woodward near the Fox Theatre.
The northbound lane of Woodward Avenue is completely taken over by protesters in Detroit. They stopped to let others catch up. Has to go from Comerica Park back to Grand Circus. Large crowd in the hundreds. Not sure how the DDOT 4 bus will get through here.
Rae Oliver, Victoria Clark, Chantel Watkins, and friend holding signs as they march along I-75 near Cass Tech back to DPD Headquarters. This has been a completely peaceful protest to this point. Supporters have marched against racism, police brutality, and Black lives.
Hundreds of people have blocked the middle of Michigan Avenue near the Rosa Parks Transit Center with their hands up screaming “Don’t Shoot.” They are marching back toward DPD headquarters. Supposed to end at 5:30 p.m.
Back at DPD headquarters and hundred of others protesters have gathered this group, headed toward Corktown — Detroit’s oldest neighborhood along Michigan Avenue.
As the crowd enters Corktown, as you can see it stretches from Michigan Avenue and the Lodge, all the way back to DPD Headquarters. I’d say there are more than 1,000 people out here. More are scattered in the back. Again, not sure where this route will end up. Still peaceful.
Someone just got arrested and now protesters aren’t letting DPD leave with him in the car. We are on the corner of a Michigan and Rosa Parks Boulevard.
HAPPENING NOW: A protester was just arrested and placed in the back of a DPS squad car on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Rosa Parks Boulevard. Protesters have surrounded the car yelling “Let him go.” More DPD cars are pulling up. Not sure why the guy was arrested.
It has gotten a little our of control here. DPD brought in the horses to remove people from surrounding the car. The officers are yelling “get” to protesters and the they are responding by pulling the harnesses of the horse. Car still hasn’t moved. Wild scene.
There is clearly no direction anymore on this protest. One group is headed down Michigan Ave. toward Fairlane they said and the other is coming back to DPD headquarters. Another group is on Woodward by LCA. I hopped on a scooter and I’m done for the day. Phone is dead.
