My platform for change is my person, not my Twitter, but I want to show my care for those who I love and my thoughts for those like me who are struggling to find the right words for a moment that transcends beyond 280 characters.
To my friends of color: I love you. I see you. I’m sorry. The systems are broken, and I won’t rest until we rebuild them together.
To my white friends: it’s time for us to listen, not with likes and retweets, but with our hearts and minds. We cannot pretend to fully know what our friends of color are going through, but we can stand alongside them and help amplify voices that have been ignored for too long.
One of my heroes, @BenjaminSWatson, wrote in his book Under Our Skin that "So many…posture a passion for equal rights and justice. And yet while they embrace their intellectual passion, they keep their personal connection to real people at arm's length…”
“…This is the problem. We are separate. We keep ourselves separate. Even those who make a show of sympathy for racial issues keep separate from the people who live in it. We don't look for ways to personally connect with each other."
Now is not the time to be separate. Let’s come together and make tomorrow better than today. I love you guys. My heart is aching, but I have hope for the future. John 13:35
