i know this is long, but it's incredibly important. i've held off on posting anything about George Floyd's murder because i don't have anything original to contribute and i don't want to dilute the conversation and take away from those who have actually experienced racism.
HOWEVER i've realised that not everyone has the same twitter bubble that i do, and i want to amplify some threads i've seen over the last day in case this helps them reach anyone they otherwise wouldn't. please take some time to look through, educate yourself, and take action.
from so far away the best thing we can do is provide whatever we can to help those in a position to physically do something. this thread includes organisations and people on the ground at protests. places to donate: https://twitter.com/traderjosephina/status/1266244560906104834
since i have some disposable income at the moment i've donated to the Minnesota Freedom Fund and encourage you to do the same, even if you can only spare a little https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/donate
here is a google drive with some resources to help educate yourself. don't try and get black people to explain things to you, it's draining of time and energy. make the effort to educate yourself whenever you can. https://twitter.com/oliveyoongs/status/1265879384868532225
and more for educating yourself https://twitter.com/FILMSHAWTY/status/1266029625626497031
and more https://twitter.com/justinaireland/status/1266354239678353408
also since most of my followers are white and british, a reminder that this is not just a US issue, but an issue at home too https://twitter.com/oonskie/status/1265668012901830657
here is a master thread of petitions you can sign https://twitter.com/kiesdaya/status/1265782360252887040
it is not enough for us to sit and tweet, this, and the hundreds of other similar crimes, are a result of a system designed to protect white people, and target minorities, meaning all white people benefit from it. give what time and energy you can, have difficult conversations
with the people around you, your family and friends, the people you care about, no matter how uncomfortable you feel, black people feel worse. we (me included) are not doing enough to help. i encourage you to amplify black voices no matter how big or small your platform is
just want to tack this on to this thread as i encouraged donations to MFF. they’re asking people to redirect their funds to other places now https://twitter.com/keyrodi/status/1266442545250406401?s=21 https://twitter.com/keyrodi/status/1266442545250406401
