Teachers: if you haven't been shaken up by the events of this week, well frankly, you should have. The world is locked into a conversation surrounding racism & race politics. It's not always a well handled conversation but we do our kids a disservice by not inviting them into it.
We owe it to the next generation to frame the conversation, set out the core values, and undo the structures that are making these abhorrent realities possible. We can't let this slide.
Education is the whole world's responsibility. And the agendas scream at you in the face. It's so obvious what we need to address. All this messing about with increasingly meaningless qualifications while racism, sexism, capitalism and toxic masculinity run riot.
The schools are closed but our children are not on pause. There is no 'catch up' when we return. There are agendas to address. If your heart isn't beating a bit faster you need to look around a bit harder and see this for what it is.
This is why I teach. This is why I write books about race. This is why I champion black art. This is why I design curriculum. We can't just hope that kids grow towards the liberal light and emerge as vaguely woke adults hashtagging on social media. No way. It's not good enough.
The curriculum is where we can kill racism and structural prejuduce at seed. We can literally teach it. We can design the conversations that will stop racism being a 'debate' and liberate marginalised peoples.
