New York City will begin the process of reopening June 8th & LA restaurants & barbershops can now open. The lockdown should be over by July 4th, but this months long lockdown was one of the worst failures in our nation’s history, the worst of my lifetime for sure.
You could potentially defend the first two weeks or so of the lockdown because of all the uncertainty — although I suspect data will prove it was mostly unhelpful & not worth the cost in jobs — but anything longer than that was an abject failure of public policy.
The second worst failure of my life was the Iraq War. It’s worth noting both decisions were made in times of emotion & fear & they were mostly done with bipartisan support. Total agreement is the province of dictatorships, not democracies. Robust debate & disagreement is healthy.
