police brutality does not only exist in the US, it is everywhere. I live in France, and i decided to make this thread to remember the names of black people who got killed here because their lives also matter. #BlackLivesMatters
Abou Bakari Tandia, january 24th 2004

he got beaten up in detention and died after 6 weeks in coma. the police said he killed himself by hurting his head on the wall. we all know what actually happened.
Bouna Traoré (15) and his friend Zyed Benna (17), oct 27, 2005.
their story tore the country. they got electrocuted while they tried to hide because they were scared from the police who chased them (for no reason). the officers shouldve have been jailed for 5 years, but didn’t
Louis Mendy (34), may 3th, 2007

He got shot both in the head and the arm after he tried to escape from a fight with a WHITE man, and died on the spot. No charges were pressed on the policeman (couldn’t find his photo only his family during a silent protest)
Lamine Dieng, june 17th 2007

He died in a police van after 4 policemen made him lay on the floor and had their knees on him. the policemen won the trial and his family had to pay a compensation... they had to pay the ones who killed their son, brother, cousin.
Larami Samoura (16) and Moushin Sehhouli (15) november 25th, 2007

they were driving a motorcycle when the police deliberately hit them with a car. bloody riots took place for 15 days in the city (parisian neighborhood) the driver’s sentence was 6 months, but they canceled it.
Elvis Akpa (47), october 1st, 2007

He fell from the window when the police barged into his place because he was supposedly dealing drugs, but he was just a nigerian immigrant struggling to get his french nationality.

(i don’t have a picture)
Baba Traoré (29) april 4th, 2008

He was on his way to the hospital to give his kidney to his sister. the RATP and police controlled him on the subway. he forgot his papers, so as an immigrant he got scared and ran away. then, they pushed him in the river. he drowned.
Mahamadou Marega (38), november 30th 2010

the police came after a fight with his landlord. he‘s alone against 17 policemen. he’s beaten up on the floor while he screams and begs for them to stop. then, 4 of them get him in the elevator, when they’re out Mahamadou is dead.
There are many others cases but it’s hard to find information on them, sometimes it’s “a young boy” sometimes it’s “a father”, things happen all the time but people here struggle so much to speak up and it’s really difficult to be able to make a change.
approximately 1 person gets killed by the police every month, not only black people, it’s also other poc communities. in 10 years more than 100 have been killed by policemen but NONE of them have been jailed or convicted, not even fired.
we should #SayTheirNames we shouldn’t forget about them and we should always fight for this cause until black people’s lives matter as much as others. yes #BlackLivesMatters and it won’t change anything if you just turn a blind eye. i just wish french people would be
more concerned about this because it’s so important here too and there are so many people suffering because of racism and police brutality everyday when they don’t deserve any of the treatment they get.
i hope this thread didn’t offense anyone and just helped you remember the names of people you probably didn’t know about but whose lives mattered and whose names deserve to be pronounced and never forgotten.
