There remains a ton of confusion about the burn ban on a daily basis. I regularly get inquiries from people who wish to follow the rules but have no idea what the rules are, and regularly hear crews on scene of the same situation. Ok, so here's my free idea @hfxgov:
Why can't there be a simple website where people can punch in their address and receive the burn rules that are applicable to that address at that time?
Two of the main factors are whether you're on municipal water/sewer, and whether a burn ban is on that day. I'm no tech wiz, but you'd think it could pull data from Halifax Water's site + the province and provide the homeowner with a simple readout of the rules for their location
I.e. you go to the website, punch in your address, 123 Main, and the website says "You're on municipal water, and there is no burn ban today, so here's what you can and can't do"
The rules are complex and it's made worse by the fact they change based on day and location. This idea doesn't seem like it would be too complicated to develop, and I think it could help a lot of homeowners who want to follow the rules and just can't figure out what they are.
To be sure, there's lots of people who don't care what the rules are and burn anyway. But I do think there are a lot of people who just have no idea and would be willing to follow the rules if the municipality had better communications on this issue.
