Am reminded of the time I was at a BLM protest a couple years back & an on looking white woman grabbed a "BLACK LIVES MATTER" sign and danced around with it. The congratulatory applause was so loud that it drowned out the voice of the black protest organizer thru their megaphone.
Am also reminded of the Abolish ICE protest the year after, where yt Antifa members continually urged me to stand on the front lines and taunt armed officers with them, against my wishes. One bragged about how excited they were to get arrested.
I get a similar, albeit much less intense vibe on Twitter the last two days. White people love to uplift other white peoples' sanitized, conditional allyship. Far more than they are willing to do the same for black people and black communities.
Showing up is appreciated, but allyship is about more than echoing the statements of other allies. Doing so at the expense of intelligent, unrefined BLACK voices is nothing more than self congratulatory & indulgent.
This isn't the biggest or most important takeaway from this entire ordeal, but it's flown under the radar enough to where holding it in was hurting my peace.
