It was July 2008 you came bounding into my life, ready to chew every piece of furniture you could get your fat little chocolate paws on.
Rufus was your name, the aptly titled ‘mischief maker’ of your litter.
You cried all night your first time home, I slept downstairs with you.

From that night on, we were inseparable. You were my best friend. We got into so much trouble together. Do you remember the trampoline? We used to bounce so high on it together, we broke it by jumping from the patio onto the damn thing (nearly two metres). Dad was so mad at us.
Don’t even get my started on your eating habits. Or, lack thereof. You ate EVERYTHING. Shoes, McDonald’s, chocolate, cardboard, handbags, bras and your speciality was emptying the rubbish bin.
I lost count of how many times you got the bin lid stuck on your big head.

You also always put up with my shit, look at you modelling on my 2012 Dell laptop for some cute Twitter pictures. I think this took like two hours to get right? I had to bribe you with food, you chunky pup.
Speaking of putting up with my shit, whilst revising for my GCSE’s (I was grounded...) you were my only source of fun. I’m so sorry for 2012 me, but, you look hilarious.
I’ve lost count of how many friends have passed through our doors, you’ve loved each and every one of them unconditionally. Wagging your tail and smiling up them, through drunk times, sad times and happy times.
You were a big soft, SILLY, chunky brown bear. These are some of my favourite pictures of you being Doofus Rufus.
And there’s hundreds and hundreds of us together, but these are my favourites. You’re my best friend Rufus, even if you absolutely hated photos with me.
I could do this all day. But the best things in life have to come to an end sometime, and for you that was today.
Here is my sunshine in the sun for once last time.

It was May 2020 that you left us Rufus. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.
You cried all night when you came to us. You wouldn’t settle. I slept downstairs with you.
You cried all night on your last night with us. You wouldn’t go in.
I slept outside with you.
My lad x
