I joined about 40 nights of protest of the 100+ nights in Ferguson. This is a thread of what I learned:
- Have a cover for your face, do not allow yourself to be easily identified
- Put your phone on airplane mode, digital surveillance is real
- Download the SIGNAL app ASAP
- WhatsApp is not encrypted, please do not use that as an organizing tool
- Do not aim to get arrested. Those charges are expensive and can take years to come off your record.
-Have a plan if you plan to march, and don’t get CORNERED by police
- Write a phone number to call on your arm w marker, just in case you are arrested
- You only have to identify yourself NAME and DOB, and then hold your responses and wait to speak to a lawyer
- DO NOT VOLUNTEER info over to police, they will try to hold that info against you
- Under the 4th Amendment, You do not have to give your passwords to your digital devices to police. However, facial recognition passwords are not protected
- The media will gaslight you and try to manipulate you, STICK to your demands, and do not answer their questions.
- Nonprofit orgs will try to co-op your actions, claim it as their own, pitch it to foundations, and raise money. Be careful
- Worse than nonprofits, there are lots of very articulated millennials and elders that will try to speak for you and too will try to profit off of this
- There are many good ppl in the movement. Ask for advice and tips, we have been rebelling and rioting since before the 1700s, there are amazing lessons in the movement. What you& #39;re doing is important. Don& #39;t let anyone tell you differently.
- Protect your personal information online. Lots of trolls captured pictures from live streams and pics posted online of protesters, and trolls found their home address, workplace, etc., protect yourself!
- Be careful of some people promoting actual violence, many times these people are the feds trying to convince you to do some crazy shit. This happens, trust me! They may even start it, to provoke you. Be smart.
- Racists vigilantes will come out, they may spit on you, call your names, and try to provoke you. KNOW WHAT WILL MAKE YOUR TICK. Stay disciplined in your actions and protest.
- KNOW you have the world& #39;s attn as you demand justice for someone who was MURDERED by the hands of police. LOVE on one another, you are doing a good thing. Keep protesting. Many activists are born out of rebellions, I was one. Give it all you got, there is much work to be done.
By now, more outsiders may be going to MN like celebrities. You have to know celebrities can’t save us. They pledge allegiance to their social status not us. Give them your demands, tell them to use their platform to speak up in solidarity, and donate to bail funds and actions
Churches will, too, send delegations to pray for the young people to be “non-violent.” Respectfully tell them to create praying circles around the police if they want to help. Jesus overturned tables at the temple and stood up against an unjust empire. They too can do the same!
As more white folks and light skin POC join you in the streets tell them to make a line in the front between you and the police, the police are less violent towards them. Put the light skin at the end of your lines.

I say this as a light skin POC. It works.
Protests are not PHOTO OPS. Many times we see police abusing 10 protesters, while 200+ protesters are standing with their phones out, taking selfies. Don& #39;t be that person. Protect one another, don& #39;t just stand there. Pull each other in and don& #39;t get snatched up by police.
