As the protests and riots in MPLS continue, you’ll see people say, “well they should protest, but not like THAT!” I’ve heard many people, people in my own family talk like this. I have probably talked like this before! But it’s ignorant.

I’ve said this before but I’ll never forget walking down Clark St in Lincoln Park after the Black Hawks won the Stanley Cup. The mostly white, affluent fans celebrated by destroying every storefront window. So yeah, white communities generally don't mind destruction of property.

The bro-fans rioted because they were bored and… happy? The riots and protests in MPLS are taking place because black people are left with no recourse and no justice as they are murdered again and again, city by city, day by day.

And because the change they need threatens white superiority and white systems, white people want to delegitimize their anguish by saying they aren’t protesting the “right” way.

Arresting the murderous cops is necessary, but it’s not enough. Because tomorrow there will be another George Floyd, or Breonna Taylor, or Ahmaud Arbery. We need to change the system that lets this happen. We need to let the message sink in: #BlackLivesMatter
