Protests: a survival guide
Not every protest turns violent but unfortunately after the presidents actions last night I felt it necessary to make this thread. Feel free to add to it, te best thing we can do is educate and protect one another.
- wear long sleeves. I understand you may get hot but if tear gas is launched you’ll be thankful you covered up
- Goggles, Again this is if tear gas is launched. A cheap pair of swimming goggles can protect your eyes well enough if you can’t afford any other option
- A mask, a standard N95 can work wonders in the event of a gas canister going off. However I highly recommend a reusable respirator if it can be afforded
- Facial covering, to be worn OVER your mask or respirator. Facial recognition technology is only getting better. Bail is expensive, keep your identity hidden
- Don’t bring your personal cell. It’s one of the easiest ways for your identity to be confirmed and can lead to your arrest. We’re guaranteed a right to peaceful protest but if things turn violent, better safe than sorry
- Write an emergency contact number on your body. Ensure it’s out of sight at all times.if it’s exposed you’re putting yourself and your loved ones endanger. I suggest on your upper arm or thigh. The emergency contact should be easy for a medical professional to see if u get hurt
- If possible wear knee and elbow pads. If you have to crawl you’ll be grateful you wore them. It’s a strategy common amongst protesters in HK
- don’t wear body lotion, sunscreen, or anything of the like. You don’t fully understand how the chemicals in the lotion will react w gas
- Have a bag with water in an accessible compartment (think the pouches on the side) if tear gas is launched you’ll need to be able to flush your, or an ally’s eyes out
- wear glasses, NOT CONTACTS. Contacts will make it harder to flush your eyes if tear gas is used
- If you have a health complication and need food bring it in the bag but keep an additional sugary snack in your pocket if the bag is lost
- Money, not in a wallet but cash or coin for a pay phone or transport. Keep it in your front pocket !
- a first aid kit, ensure that you understand basic medical procedures and that it has all necessary materials
- avoid publicizing your attendence. Do not record the event, you’re putting yourself and fellow protesters in danger
- tell someone you trust where you intend to be, when you should be home by and where you will go if things go south. Keep that information confidential.
- don’t go alone. Take a friend or family member and stay together.
- the cops are not your friends. Avoid them if you can. If you are white protect black protesters. If things escalate use your body to keep cops at a distance.
