Anti-blackness in the South Asian community isn& #39;t a secret, and it& #39;s time we check ourselves and do better. I asked SA followers on Instagram about how we can do this, and I want to consolidate some of the really good answers I got. #southasiansforblacklives
First and foremost, we& #39;re allies. But we don& #39;t get to speak over black voices. We& #39;re here to support and uplift, but we need to know our place.
Talk to your parents. Teach them, educate them. Call them out on their racism immediately. So much of our racism is passed down from generations of anti-blackness in our families and it& #39;s time we put an end to this.
Get rid of anti-black dating preferences. I think this is something we see way too often in our communities and we need to change this.
Call people out immediately. When you see racism, when you hear the n word or racist jokes, call them out immediately and not wait until afterwards. People will continue to do these things if no one is there to hold them accountable.
Educate yourself on how racism has evolved and how it still hurts black people today. Let& #39;s be honest, what we learned in school is probably about 5% of the actual atrocities that have been committed. It& #39;s not enough; we need to constantly keep learning and listening.
Stop being racist pick-mes (this was one of my favorite responses!) -- we tend to try and get white approval to feel better about ourselves. It& #39;s time to stop.
Don& #39;t deny the part we& #39;ve played. We& #39;re guilty of being racist, anti-black. All of us in the SA community. It& #39;s just a fact. Admit it and strive to be better.
Finally, if you have the means to, donate. There are a lot of really good organizations doing great things, and we should pitch in if we can. And if you can& #39;t, atleast spread the word around.
I can& #39;t take the credit for any of these answers, it was all thanks to people I interact with! But I did it was important to share and important to remember that we need to do better.
