Alright here we go. I'm annoyed and a thread about insurance is ensuing. You can't just scream insurance at people. Insurance isn't some magical thing that just automagically drops you a check for your stuff if it burns. It is a long, complicated process.
Many of these buildings will have insurance. Let's just say your car was set on fire last night. You file a claim. First you have to pay the deductible which you may or may not have the money for. If you can even afford full coverage. If you have liability only? You're done.
Then you have to wait for it to be investigated. And it will be investigated. They're not just going to chalk it up to "oh must be riot." A fire investigator will come out and take photos and interview you.
This process could take weeks. And you don't have a choice, because it is in the contract that insurance companies can investigate losses. If you refuse to cooperate, they'll deny the claim and move on.
So you have no car. No way to get to work, no way to get to school, no way to travel. And then it comes back that oh hey, your policy doesn't cover civil unrest. Claim denied. So then you're out a car and the insurance money.
And yes, Target and Autozone and Arbys have excellent insurance and they will be covered. But small businesses will be hurt. It can take months before the insurance is settled.
I understand that people are angry. I understand why they're doing this. And I agree. But screaming "tHatS wHy tHeY HavE inSuRAnCe" at people is not helpful and it isn't accurate. Many people will not be able to recover even with insurance.
And now because they have a claim, their premiums may go up.
All I'm asking is think before you burn things.
